Developing Anti-Racist Approaches to Research and Analytics at ICES

This virtual session will introduce the Guidance Document and Framework for Anti-Racist Approaches to Research and Analytics at ICES to organizations and community members interested in developing or learning about integrating race and related data into their research or work.

The webinar will highlight the key principles and committed actions, with a focus on health equity data integration and community data governance.

We will also demonstrate the implications for moving forward and the need to reflect on race and related data collection and use particularly in the healthcare research space.

S peakers:

A rjumand Siddiqi

Arjumand Siddiqi is Professor, Division Head of Epidemiology, and Canada Research Chair in Population Health Equity at Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. She also holds appointments at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. Dr. Siddiqi’s research focuses on how policies and other societal conditions explain health inequalities, particularly how they arise, why they persist, and what might change them. She is also working on philosophical implications of work in this area. Dr. Siddiqi received her doctorate from Harvard University.

M ichael Schull

Michael Schull is chief executive officer at ICES, and professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Schull's research focuses on health service utilization, quality of care and patient outcomes as they relate to emergency care, and the study of interventions designed to reduce emergency department waiting times. He is currently working with other researchers and health system decision-makers to evaluate policy interventions designed to reduce emergency department waiting times, and innovative ways to better integrate health care between hospital and community providers. Dr. Schull practices as an emergency medicine specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

A strid Guttmann

Dr. Guttmann joined ICES in 2001 as a research fellow, became a scientist in August 2004, a senior scientist in 2010 and the chief science officer in 2014. She is a staff physician in the Division of Paediatric Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children and a professor of paediatrics with a cross-appointment in the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Her research aims to improve child health through population-based studies that inform or evaluate health system programs and policies with a focus on vulnerable families.

L aura Ferreira-Legere

Laura Ferreira-Legere is the Senior Manager, Public Engagement and Knowledge Translation at ICES. She has held professional roles in clinical nursing practice in Atlantic Canada and nursing guideline development in Ontario, including as a volunteer panel member contributing to best practice recommendations on equitable health care for 2SLGBTQI+ communities. Her Master’s thesis on reproductive cancer care in lesbian and bisexual communities received the York University Nursing Thesis Award. Most recently, Laura was a Senior Research Project Manager at ICES in the cardiovascular program and has worked with numerous stakeholder and public panels in her past roles.
