You may have heard the saying, “When the tide is out the table is set.” But is it really? Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are one of many threats that are growing in frequency, duration and intensity in a warming world. New harmful species are making their way into our waters. Toxins are flowing into the marine environment with each atmospheric river. Intertidal species are baking during heat domes. The WATCH Project is a collaborative seafood and climate change pilot project that is examining how climate impacts layer onto existing challenges, including deeply rooted policy gaps and barriers. With community-based monitoring, and adaptation planning that explores exposures, sensitivities and adaptive capacities among human communities as well as the marine food species that are important to them, the WATCH Project is taking important steps to help ensure safe and secure seafood harvests for coastal First Nations.
