Study of distribution of invasive mosquitoes in Newfoundland and Labrador and St. Pierre and Miquelon: a citizen science approach
Description
The research project aimed to explore the distribution of native and invasive species of mosquitoes across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and in the French overseas territory of St. Pierre and Miquelon, and existence and distribution of viral pathogens in the mosquitoes. We used citizen science approach in recognition, reporting, collection and submission of mosquito specimens by citizens. This strategy helped to identify new mosquito populations, new distribution areas and temporal activity patterns of invasive and native mosquito species. We identified three invasive species (Culex pipiens, Aedes japonicas and Aedes vexans) and Snowshoe Hare virus and Jamestown Canyon virus in multiple locations of Newfoundland.
