Prenatal and Pediatric Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV): Room to improve the cascade of care?

Pregnant persons and children with hepatitis B or C are emerging priority populations. This session will discuss the cascade of care as it relates to testing and diagnostics, linkage to care, and interventions both related to prevention and treatment.

Intended audience: Microbiologists, epidemiologists, health equity professionals, health care providers who provide prenatal, pediatric, or general practice/care for persons with hepatitis B or C

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the current practices for screening, linkage to care, and treatment for pregnant persons with hepatitis B and C in Ontario.
  2. Understand the current practices in prevention of pediatric acquisition, as well as treatment for hepatitis B and C.
  3. Discuss areas for improved investment at the health system level such as prevention strategies, improvements in screening and testing algorithms, and better collection of administrative data.

Presenter(s): Mia Biondi

Mia Biondi, PhD, NP-PHC, received her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from McGill University, and completed her clinical training at Western University. Mia is an Assistant Professor at York University and oversees the Nurse Practitioner (NP) program. Mia continues to practice as a primary care NP, with focused practices in viral hepatitis, HIV prevention, and working with trafficked persons. Her research focuses on increasing hepatitis B, C, and HIV screening and treatment through alternative diagnostic and systems approaches.
