PHO Rounds: Public Health Nurse-Delivered Group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects up to 1 in 5 birthing persons and has a negative impact on infants and families, however, just 15% of birthing persons can access evidence-based treatment. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are highly skilled professionals that screen and support those with PPD, yet no research has examined if they can deliver effective group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for PPD. In this study, 141 Ontarians with PPD were randomized to receive group CBT for PPD plus treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU alone. Those who received group CBT for PPD were five times more likely to experience remission from depression than those receiving TAU alone, and also had clinically meaningful improvements in worry, and the mother-infant relationship. These improvements persisted up to six months post-treatment. This session will discuss the study, associated findings and PHN-delivered group CBT for PPD as a potentially scalable intervention that could be administered in-person or online, to improve access to treatment for those with PPD.

Intended audience: Public Health Nurses, Public Health Managers, Maternal/Reproductive Health Professionals

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

         1. Describe the prevalence and impact of postpartum depression on birthing parents and families.

         2. Understand the treatment effects Public Health Nurse-delivered group CBT for PPD has on maternal depression, anxiety, and the mother-infant relationship.

         3. Describe the potential benefits of CBT training for Public Health Nurses beyond group delivery alone.

         4. Understand how evidence-based public health interventions can be collaboratively integrated into practice after the research phase.
