PHO Rounds: Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance: Antimicrobial stewardship amid the COVID-19 pandemic

The impact of COVID-19 on antimicrobial use and resistance continues to evolve. This session will provide new insights into how COVID-19 has impacted hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs and present the most recent findings of a rapid review on bacterial co-infections and secondary infections in patients with COVID-19. Implications for antimicrobial stewardship programs will be discussed.

Intended audience: Clinicians (Pharmacists, Physicians, Nurses) in all healthcare settings. Public Health practitioners and researchers with an interest in infectious diseases and COVID-19.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the potential impact of COVID-19 on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance. 
  2. Explain rapid review findings on bacterial co-infection and secondary infection in patients with COVID-19. 
  3. Discuss how COVID-19 has impacted antibiotic stewardship programs globally.
  4. Describe how COVID-19 has impacted hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs in Ontario.


Presenter(s): Valerie Leung and Dr. Miranda So

Valerie Leung, BScPhm, ACPR, MBA, is the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Lead at Public Health Ontario, where she works with a multidisciplinary team and external partners to advance antimicrobial stewardship across the healthcare system. She is also a Clinical Pharmacist at Michael Garron Hospital, Toronto East Health Network, where she is involved in local quality improvement initiatives. 

Dr. Miranda So, BScPhm, PharmD, MPH, is a Pharmacotherapy Specialist at the Sinai Health System-University Health Network Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. Miranda teaches in the infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship curricula in her role as assistant professor (status-only) at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto. Miranda is also a clinician-investigator with the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute. Her research interests focus on antimicrobial stewardship in immunocompromised patients, specifically hematology-oncology patients and organ transplant recipients. In addition to the use of technology in health professions education, her research also expands to antimicrobial use and population health.
