PHO Rounds: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Routine Immunizations in Alberta

Studies on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in other countries have found a decline in routine vaccine uptake as a result of reduced health system capacity and changes in immunization practices and attitudes. However, there is limited published data from Canada on this subject. Using population-based administrative data, the presenters examine the impact of the pandemic by comparing routine vaccine coverage before and during the pandemic in Alberta, Canada. Early findings indicate a decline in coverage varied by age and dose, with childhood vaccines given at older ages showing a larger drop in 2020 compared to 2019.

Intended audience: Public health policy advisors, program administrators, and researchers

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the extent to which routine vaccine coverage declined during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic.
  2. Understand whether vaccinations missed during the early pandemic period were caught up.
  3. Consider strategies for catch-up of missed routine immunizations.
