PHO Microbiology Rounds: COVID-19 Diagnostics to Save Lives and Livelihoods

The COVID-19 pandemic should serve as a wake-up call for countries to develop a diagnostic/surveillance system that is the backbone of the health care system. This system should have data connectivity and appropriate technologies at every level; from ultra-sophisticated detection and sequencing at the top level, to point-of-care diagnostics at the community level. At peacetime, diagnostic systems are the eyes and ears of the public health infrastructure, sounding alarms at unusual disease patterns and in the event of outbreaks/pandemics, the system has the capacity to rapidly respond. The pandemic has stimulated many promising technological innovations that will be examined in this presentation. What are the promises and challenges in adopting these innovations to “build back better”?

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the role that diagnostic tests play in the COVID-19 pandemic response
  2. Identify technological innovations that can be used to enhance pandemic preparedness and control
  3. Discuss challenges in technology adoption and possible solutions

Presenter(s): Dr. Rosanna Peeling

Rosanna Peeling is currently Professor/Chair of Diagnostics Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Director of the International Diagnostic Centre (IDC) and Professor at the University of Manitoba. Trained as a medical microbiologist, she worked as the Research Coordinator at the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases in Geneva and Chief of the National Laboratory for STDs in Canada. Her research focuses on defining unmet diagnostic needs, facilitating test development, evaluation and implementation. She established the IDC to advocate the value of diagnostics, foster innovation, and accelerate access to quality-assured diagnostics.
