PHO Rounds: Cannabis in Pregnancy

Cannabis is widely used in Canada, including in pregnancy. Consuming cannabis in pregnancy may pose certain health risks to individuals who are pregnant and their infants. This session describes potential biological mechanisms through which cannabis may influence pregnancy outcomes and fetal neurodevelopment. Recent epidemiological research related to cannabis use in pregnancy in Ontario, is discussed, including associations with pregnancy outcomes and long-term developmental outcomes in children with in utero exposure.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the effects of cannabis use on pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes
  2. Provide evidence-based messaging about cannabis use during pregnancy
  3. Summarize current evidence on trends in use and safety in pregnancy
